Pencils of Promise

Pencils of Promise at Sofi B. Estates

Arriving at Sofi B. Estates feels like you’re the guest of honor arriving at a palace for a royal banquet. I kid you not. The estate is that big, the trimmings are well manicured, and every detail from doorknob to wall hanging has been done in the most purposeful of ways. Whether spring or fall, I love doing shoots for IN the Loop at Sofi B. Estates.

The Pencils of Promise fundraiser was no different. Pencils of Promise is a for-progress organization that donates 100% of their resources to building schools all around the world. Pencils of Promise believes that every child (and every community) needs the opportunity to benefit from education, and to date, has built more than 324 schools around the world. 100% of those schools are run by members of the community, and 100% are government funded. Pretty amazing.

The fundraiser was lavish complete with a live pianist, DJ, waiters, open bar, and beautiful Christmas decorations adding extra merriment to the occasion. The fundraiser kicks off a much larger campaign aiming to raise $25,000 for Pencils of Promise in the coming year.

People danced, donated, and enjoyed the night. Which is easy to do when Angela Khan, Owner of Sofi B. Estates and an avid supporter of Pencils of Promise, is hosting the party.

If you or your company is interested in hosting an event at Sofi B. Estates, visit their Facebook page or visit their website for more information. The estate is open year-round for both indoor and outdoor events.

Chefski Lamb Lollipops

Gourmet on GameDay Part III: Lamb Lollipops

Lamb and lollipops, you say? It’s true! These bone-in, savory delights do resemble lollipops because they were carved from a New Zealand rack of lamb by our very own Chefski. He marinated these culinary creations in a luscious combination of balsamic vinegar, olive oil, garlic, basil, mint, and thyme and then grilled them up GameDay style. Easier than a touchdown on 4th and goal! These delicious morsels will make the perfect addition to your next party around the pigskin!

Greek Islands

Gyros and Belly Dancing

Traveling to Greece is one of my fondest memories. The food, culture, and people make this a go-to destination for all. Even though it’s been years since I walked along the Aegean Sea in Santorini or explored the ruins of Athens, I still get my fix of Mediterranean cooking quite frequently… and it doesn’t cost a huge plane ticket either.

Greek Islands is a family owned restaurant on South Meridian Street offering what I think is the most delicious Greek food in the Midwest. A stone’s throw from the historic Shapiro’s Deli and in walking distance from Lucas Oil Stadium, this authentic eatery offers every traditional dish found in the Hellenic Republic.

Big George, owner of Greek Islands, and the rest of his Greek family make visiting this restaurant a homey experience with big barrel hugs and traditional belly dancing.

My recommendation is to try the Gyro with extra tzatziki sauce! Remember, gyro is pronounced yee-ro. The meat is cooked perfectly and the pita bread is delightfully warm. They also have delicious hummus.

The next time you visit Greek Islands, tell Big George that everyone from IN the Loop TV Show says hello! You’ll be part of the family in no time.

Chefski

Gourmet on GameDay, Part II: Buffalo Chicken Dip

Chefski and I continued our culinary journey together as he put a gourmet spin on a GameDay favorite and also inadvertently taught me a mother sauce of French cooking (Béchamel)! Our buffalo chicken dip began with a roux, which is comprised of equal parts butter and flour. The roux was then transformed into a Béchamel sauce by adding milk. Finally, the Béchamel became a Mornay sauce by adding the Gouda and Danish blue cheeses. (Did you totally just have a Julie & Julia moment reading that, or was it just me?) Add that chicken, hot off the grill, which was basted in hot sauce beforehand, and it perfectly balances out the creaminess and dank of the cheeses. Throw in a dash of Chefski’s signature spice blend and you have got yourself a winner! Kinda like the Colts against the Broncos! Go Horse!

The finale event for Midwest Fashion Week 2015 featured a runway show of designers from across the region as well as a local footwear designer and also a student designer, showcasing their offerings in an elegant and modern space at 502 East Event Centre in Carmel. Title sponsor, Elán Furs closed out the evening with a vast array of garments in a variety of colors and styles for both men and women. The founder of Black Models Matter was also present and utterly pleased with the diversity found in the models working the catwalk. Students, bloggers, editors, retailers, media and the most fashion forward of Indianapolis comprised the audience of the closing night of Midwest Fashion Week 2015 and are all looking forward to the next fashion week in spring of 2016.

Chefski Pierogis

Gourmet on GameDay

As you can see in this segment, I was at a loss for words while observing Chefski in his element and sampling his gourmet take on GameDay fare! This was also my first experience with pierogis and I have to say, it was an absolute treat! The caramelized onion with thyme and that imperial oatmeal stout combined with the potato in the pierogi created a depth of flavor that is sure to be a touchdown at your next tailgate! I am beyond thrilled to show you our next installment of Chefski’s Game Day Gourmet!

Kammy's Kause fundraiser for 4p- research

Kammy’s Kause fundraiser for 4p- research

Camping, live music, good vibes, and a good Kause. Sounds like a perfect combination for summer fun right? Well every year in August, Jared Hiner throws Kammy’s Kause at the American Legion park in Fortville. A two day  event with tons of entertainment! All for $10! That price includes camping, tons of live local music from Indy’s top musicians, free kiddie rides from blow up slides to petting zoo’s. Lot’s of entertainment for $10  and the proceeds goes to 4P minus research. Kammy’s Kause is one of the biggest if not THE biggest charity event to raise money for the research of 4P minus. Also know as Wolf–Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) which is a very rare chromosome disorder. Only a few thousand know causes in the entire world.

Kammy’s Kause has been running over ten years now and is only getting bigger. With donations for an auction from tickets sales they have raised over $50,000 for the Kause.

It’s an emotional and entertaining. You gotta come check it out next summer. For the Kause man! I make it a priority to go every year!
